Fancy But Simple Banana Date Peanut Butter Toast

    banana date peanut butter toast

I'm sure you've tried toast... but have you ever tried banana date peanut butter toast? A little sweet, a little savoury, a little salty. This is the toast topping you never knew you needed.

Classic sourdough is always a winner in my opinion. Same goes for peanut butter.

But add peanut butter, date syrup, and sea salt to the mix? Now that's just unrivalled. While date syrup and sea salt may sound like unusual additions to classic banana peanut butter toast, I promise you that these extra touches add a whole lot of flavour and depth, giving your average brekkie a gourmet touchup.

Banana Date Peanut Butter Toast Ingredients

    • Sourdough bread: Sourdough toast is the perfect vehicle for these tasty toppings. Not only does it get perfectly crips, but the sour flavour just adds even more oomph to an already-delicious combo. Not to mention, sourdough is said to be good for the gut, and we're all about extra health benefits here!
    • Peanut butter: Peanut butter and banana is already a winning combo, so of course that's what I went for here. I used chunky for a little extra crunch, but creamy peanut butter would also be great. If you don't like (or are allergic to) peanut butter, you can absolutely swap for another nut butter.
    • Banana: Banana is a classic-toast topper, and it doesn't disappoint in this recipe. I used a whole banana, split between two toast slices. You can use however much you want or skip the banana altogether if you must.
    • Date syrup: One of the keys for making this average toast more "special", date syrup is a natural sweetener made 100% from dates. It's not as sweet as maple syrup, and does have a fruity undertone. If you don't have it or don't like it, feel free to use honey or maple syrup instead.
    • Sea salt: Trust me on this one. The sea salt works magic when combined with sweet flavours. Make sure to use just a sprinkle, so as not to overpower the sweet tastes. I also recommend going for a flaky sea salt. If you don't already have some Maldon salt flakes in your cupboard, now is the time to get on it! Somehow, they make everything taste more gourmet.

What is Date Syrup and Where Can I Get It?

Date syrup is a syrup-style sauce made of dates. Created by heating and blending the fruit with a bit of water, date syrup is a natural alternative to processed sugars.

It looks similar to molasses, but the texture is more comparable to a liquid-y honey. Because it's made from fruits, "date syrup contains a high amount of healthy minerals including: zinc, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium and of course sugar."

You can buy date syrup at Woolworth's, Coles, and online at iHerb.
