This maca magic smoothie is simply amazing. It's quickly become one of my favourites, and needless to say, I'm obsessed.
Not only does it taste great, but it's also delicious and good for you! Thanks to the maca powder, you also get a lil' extra health boost.
Maca Powder and Its Benefits
Maca powder is a group-up powder, that comes from the root of a Peruvian vegetable. "The root, which is the edible part of the vegetable, looks similar to a cross between a parsnip and radish, with green, leafy tops," BBC Good Food explains. "It’s typically consumed as a ground powder."
Maca tastes a little earthy, slightly caramel-ish, and somewhat nutty. This makes it the perfect addition to sweeter foods like smoothies, oats, and baked goods.
According to Healthline, maca has several benefits, including:
- Highly nutritious
- Increases libido
- Relieves symptoms of menopause
- Improves mood
- Boosts energy
- May improve learning/ memory
What's in This Maca Magic Smoothie?
So now that you know the benefits of maca, it's time to get in the kitchen and make this maca magic smoothie. Here is what I used, and a few suggestions for substitutions:
- Banana: I strongly suggest using a frozen banana, to make for a creamy milkshake-like texture. If you don't have one frozen ahead of time, though, a raw banana will work just fine. Feel free to add a few ice cubes for coldness instead.
- Soy milk: I used soy milk to make this sine it has more protein, but you can use any nut or dairy milk you prefer.
- Maca powder: I used this organic maca powder, but any variation will work. You can find it at some grocery stores, or at health food shops.
- Almond extract: The almond extract lends a real cake-like flavour to this smoothie that I absolutely love. If you hate almond flavouring or have an allergy, though, simply replace this with vanilla or leave it out altogether.
