Looking to sneak more greens in? This kale apple smoothie is the perfect way. Despite its bright green colour, this nutritious smoothie actually tastes good.

If you've ever tried a kale salad, you likely know that the flavour of kale isn't taste as neutral as other greens. However, ripe bananas and fresh apples keep this green smoothie tasting nice despite the bad reputation that healthy recipes sometimes get.

With just a few simple ingredients, you'll be on your way to good health.

  • Granny Smith apple: Granny Smith apple gives this smoothie a delightfully sour touch. If you prefer your smoothies slightly sweeter, opt for a different variety. Ambrosia, Kanzi and Fuji apples are all quite sweet and would taste amazing in this recipe. Just note that your drink may not look as green. If you don't have any fresh apples on hand, you can also substitute with ¾ cup apple juice instead. Opt for a natural/no added sugar variety to keep your smoothie healthy.
  • Banana: A ripe banana adds the perfect amount of sweetness to this smoothie. Frozen banana is recommended for a creamy texture and thicker smoothie, but non-frozen also works well.
  • Kale: Frozen kale is the easiest option for this smoothie. You can find pre-portioned frozen kale at Woolworths, and it saves so much time washing and chopping. If you can't find frozen kale, you can also use fresh - just make sure you separate out the stems, as they are much tougher and less tasty.
  • Hemp seeds: Hemp seeds add healthy fats and extra protein (9.5g for 3 Tbsp). They do have a slightly earthy flavour, so if you're not a fan you can swap the hemp seeds out for almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter, chia seeds or ground flax seed.
  • Water, milk or juice: This recipe can be made with any liquid you prefer. It tastes great with regular water, but you can also use coconut water or juice for extra flavour. Green juice and orange juice add more nutrients, while coconut water provides extra hydration. Soy milk, almond milk, and coconut milk also taste great in this smoothie.
