Substantial enough to be a breakfast, but light enough for an afternoon snack, there's no time of day you can't enjoy this delicious concoction.
What Is the Difference Between Golden Kiwi and Regular Kiwi?
If you've never tried golden kiwi, add it to your must-try list. It tastes quite similar to green kiwi, but is slightly sweeter and less acidic than its green cousin.
Golden kiwis are native to China, but most of the ones you will find in Australian grocery stores come from New Zealand.
If you don't have access to golden kiwi, green works just the same! If you use green kiwi, ensure you use a super ripe banana to make up for the lack extra sweetness.
Smoothie Ingredients:
- Not only is this easy recipe a healthy way to get extra fruit in, but it's also super easy and requires only a few main ingredients.
- Kiwi: Use a golden kiwi if you can or a green kiwi if not. Either way, it'll still make a nice kiwi banana smoothie! Make sure you use ripe kiwis to ensure that this healthy smoothie tastes great.
- Banana: Using frozen banana is the best way to achieve a rich, creamy texture. If you don't have a frozen banana on hand, fell free to use use a fresh non-frozen one instead.
- Almond milk: Any other nut milk (or dairy) would work too. For extra tropical flavour, you can also use coconut water or fresh 100% orange juice instead (it'll also add some extra vitamin C!).
- Yogurt: Not only does yogurt yield a perfectly thick smoothie, but it's also an easy way to add extra protein. For more protein, we used plain Greek yogurt, but you could also use natural yogurt or any subtle vanilla flavour if you like extra sweetness. If you We used unsweetened yoghurt, but you can use vanilla if you prefer. If you are vegan or prefer non-dairy yoghurt, substitute coconut yogurt or any non-dairy yogurt that suits your own tastes.
Optional additions
Want to add a little something extra? Here are some delicious optional add ins to power-up your smoothie:
- Fresh spinach: If green smoothies are up your alley, feel free to add a handful of fresh, raw spinach. Trust us, you can barely taste it.
- Chia seeds or hemp seeds: If you want to get even more health benefits from this healthy drink, sprinkle in some chia or hemp seeds. They add extra nutrients and healthy fats!
- Other fruit: If you want to add more flavours to your smoothie, feel free to add any fresh or frozen fruit you'd like. Add apple juice for extra sweetness or add strawberries or mango to make a strawberry kiwi smoothie or kiwi mango smoothie.
- Peanut butter: Like chia and hemp seeds, peanut butter also adds a great dose of healthy fats - plus it tastes delicious!
- Protein powder: If you'd like even more protein in your smoothie, feel free to add a little bit of vegan or whey protein powder.
The secret to making a creamy drink is using a high-speed powerful blender. We love Vitamix blenders for their high speeds and ability to blend up even the tiniest of seeds.
It is essential to use a sweet kiwi for this recipe, so you might want to take measures to ensure it's ripe enough before using. To speed up the ripening process, you can keep your kiwi in a paper bag overnight or store it next to a ripe banana.
