If you’re looking to dip your toes into the waters of low-intervention wines, Speak No Evil Shiraz is the perfect place to start. This wine is approachable in flavour and price point, making it a friendly introduction to the exciting - but somewhat intimidating - world of natural wine. This shiraz is also vegan, making it a universally approachable red for drinkers of all kinds. In a perfect balance of sweet and savoury, bright and rich, acidic and smooth, this wine is like a familiar friend that deserves a spot at any dinner table.

About the Wine

Speak No Evil Shiraz is a low-intervention organic, vegan shiraz. With its low price point and controlled flavour profile, it’s perfect for someone who is looking to try something new but may be a bit unsure.

If you’re interested in breaking into natural wines, Speak No Evil offers the perfect entry point. Fruity and earthy, this low-intervention vegan shiraz offers some of the key flavour elements you expect in an Aussie-grown shiraz without being overwhelming or unapproachable to those who might not typically reach for this varietal.

About the Maker

Speak No Evil Shiraz is made from shiraz grapes sourced from vineyards across McLaren Vale (80%) and Monash Valley (20%) in South Australia. Compared to shiraz from Barossa — Australia’s most renowned shiraz region — McLaren vale shiraz is typically softer and more relaxed, and Speak No Evil’s drop is no exception.

Appearance

This wine is lighter in colour than one might expect. Bright red under light, this isn’t a big dark shiraz like those of the Barossa. The wine is clear with very little (if any sediment) visible. Highly viscous with medium clarity — a hint at the easy sipping that awaits.

Aroma

Speak No Evil  Shiraz hits your nose with a variety of spices and a subtle hint of cured leather. Not overly aromatic, the bouquet is easily dispersed, and quickly dissipates. Indisputably earthy, the nose grounds you in the genre of shiraz before the taste pulls you back to lighter tones.

Taste

While the nose leaves you ready to plunge into a deep dark wine, Speak No Evil Shiraz surprises in its approachability. Rich red fruits brightly sing out, underscored by overripe blackberries and cherry compote. Complementing the fruit, this shiraz has medium acidity which quickly fades to recall fresh-cracked black pepper. The finish of this wine is short and smooth, thanks to low tannins. While the wine itself is fresh and fruity, it leaves you lingering with its heavier side with bready undertones that make it the perfect drink to enjoy with a meal.

Pair it with

  • A high-quality, creamy blue cheese or extra-sharp cheddar, served alongside a crusty baguette.
  • Cured meats, like culatello.
  • Dried fruits including figs, dates and apricot.
  • Lighter tomato-based pasta and white meat. Complex ragus and savoury red meats might overpower the delicate palate of this shiraz.

Where to Get It

This wine is available from most bottle shops, including Dan Murphy's and BWS. You can also order it for delivery from Jimmy Brings.
